The Global Compact is a pact concluded between companies and the United Nations. Companies undertake to shape globalisation in an ecologically and socially responsible manner. The pact has been in existence since 1999 and over 10,000 companies have signed up to it to date. In addition to companies, research organisations, associations and local authorities can also join the Global Compact. For companies, this means that they are required to submit an annual progress report on their development in relation to the ten points of the Global Compact.
Nowadays, the requirements of the Global Compact are comparatively low. Reporting in accordance with the GRI or DNK requires much more detailed and in-depth information. The Global Compact is therefore criticised for favouring greenwashing, as it is easy for companies to display the UN Global Compact seal without having to make great efforts in terms of sustainability.
