Do you want to create a CO₂ balance for your company or institution, but are unsure about what data is needed, who needs to supply it, and how complex the process will be?

We are structuring the data collection and creating the key foundations for your greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory according to the GHG Protocol..

• Practical introduction to Scope 1, 2, and 3 according to the GHG Protocol
• Relevant emission sources for your organisation
• Overview of required data, data sources and internal responsibilities
• Classification of data levels: consumption data, activity data, expenditure values and estimates
• Initial cost estimate for the complete CO₂ balance
• Clear next steps for further accounting

Online workshop (on-site upon request) | up to five people from your organisation | facilitated by plant values

No more ad hoc data searches.
Time for a CO₂ balance sheet with a plan.

A CO₂ balance rarely fails because of the formula. It fails because of scattered data, unclear responsibilities, and the question of what should even be included in the balance.

This is precisely why we don't start directly with calculations, but with structure: Which locations, vehicles, energy consumption figures, journeys, purchases or supply chain aspects are relevant? What data is already available? Who needs to provide it? And where is a pragmatic level of data sufficient to begin with?

The CO₂ Balance Data Check brings order to the accounting process. You will receive a clear overview of Scope 1, 2, and 3, an initial data map, and a realistic assessment of the effort involved. Afterwards, you will know how to efficiently approach the complete GHG balance according to the GHG Protocol.

What you need to know after the CO₂ balance data check

Where do we make a sensible start?

You know the steps required to prepare your CO₂ balance in a structured way.

What belongs in Scope 1, 2, and 3?

You understand which emission sources are likely to be relevant for your organisation.

What data do we need?

You will receive an initial overview of the required consumption, activity, and cost data.

Who is involved?

You will receive guidance on which internal roles, departments, and data sources are important for data collection.

How good is our data?

You determine which data is robust and where estimates or assumptions are necessary.

What happens after that?

You will receive a realistic assessment of the effort and clear next steps for your complete carbon footprint.

Your CO₂ Footprint Data Check

Quick check and assessment of the current situation

→ concise questionnaire on organisation, locations and activities
→ Initial assessment of existing energy, mobility, and procurement data
Clarify the objective of the CO₂ balance: customer requirement, reporting, climate strategy, or internal management

Workshop - Part 1
Understanding Foundations and the Framework

Clarify the difference between CO₂ balance, GHG balance, and Corporate Carbon Footprint
Understanding Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 Emissions
→ discuss initial system boundaries and relevant organisational units

Workshop - Part 2
Sources of emissions and data requirements

identify relevant emission sources for your organisation
→ capture required data per scope roughly

Workshop - Part 3
Clarify data levels, responsibilities and effort

→ assess existing data quality: consumption data, activity data, expenditure values or estimates
→ define internal responsibilities for data collection
→ To realistically assess effort and typical data gaps

Follow-up
Data Roadmap and Next Step

compact documentation of results for further work
→ Overview of data requirements, data sources, and responsibilities
Recommendation for a complete CO₂ balance sheet with plant values

For whom? And for whom not?

Suitable if you…
  • … want to create a carbon footprint but don't know where to start
  • … need clarity on Scope 1, 2 and 3, data requirements and responsibilities
  • … want to prepare your internal data collection in a structured way
  • … assess how complex a full GHG inventory according to the GHG Protocol will be
  • … for better serving customer, funding, reporting, or climate strategy requirements
Not suitable if you…
  • ... expect a fully calculated CO₂ balance immediately
  • … are looking for a detailed Scope 3 analysis, climate strategy, or SBTi target
  • ... want to fully clarify complex corporate, production, or international site structures in a short format

Why with plant values?

  • Over 300 projects in the area of sustainability
  • Over 10 years of experience in creating and supporting sustainability reports
  • Cross-industry experience, whether as a service provider, industrial company, university, association, or social organisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CO₂ balance data check a complete CO₂ balance?

No. The CO₂ balance data check is preparation for a full CO₂ balance or GHG balance according to the GHG Protocol. In this product, we do not yet calculate emissions, but rather clarify data requirements, Scope 1, 2 and 3, responsibilities, data levels, and the anticipated effort.

What is the difference between CO₂ balance, GHG balance, and Corporate Carbon Footprint?

In a business context, the terms are often used similarly. More technically precise are greenhouse gas inventory (or GHG inventory) or Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), because not only CO₂ but also various greenhouse gases are considered and converted into CO₂ equivalents. On the website, many people refer to CO₂ inventory because the term is more understandable and easier to find.

What does Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 mean?

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned sources, for example from heating systems or company vehicles. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased energy, primarily electricity or heat. Scope 3 covers further indirect emissions along the value chain, for example from procurement, business travel, commuting, logistics, or the use of sold products.

Which data do we need for a GHG inventory according to the GHG Protocol?

Typical data includes energy consumption, fuels, fuel quantities, fleet data, business trips, commuting, purchased goods and services, waste, logistics data, or other activity and cost-based data. Which data is specifically relevant depends on your organisation, your locations, and your business model.

Do we need to have already collected data before the CO₂ balance data check?

No. Existing data is helpful but not a prerequisite. The CO₂ balance data check is specifically designed to determine what data is needed, where it might be located internally, and which departments or individuals should provide it.

Do we have to capture Scope 3 fully?

No. Together, we will determine which Scope 3 categories are likely relevant to your organisation and where a more in-depth analysis would be beneficial later on. A full Scope 3 calculation or a detailed Scope 3 relevance analysis is not part of the CO₂ footprint data check.

Who should participate in the CO₂ balance data check?

Useful participants are individuals who manage the accounting process or provide relevant data. These often include management, sustainability officers, controlling or accounting departments, facility management, fleet management, purchasing, HR, logistics, and environmental and energy management. Up to five people can participate.

What is not included in the CO₂ balance data check?

Not included are the complete calculation of the CO₂ balance, detailed research for all emission factors, an auditable GHG balance, external verification, a complete Scope 3 analysis, climate targets, SBTi classification, or a fully developed climate strategy.

Can we then create the full CO₂ balance with plant values afterwards?

Yes. The CO₂ balance data check is structured in such a way that a follow-up project can be directly developed from it. After the workshop, we can assess which data is available, which gaps need to be closed, and how the complete CO₂ balance with plant values can be meaningfully implemented.
