Definition of organisational system boundaries (locations)
Estimation of emission centres for the most important direct and indirect CO2 emissions
Definition of operational system boundaries (emission categories; e.g. Scopes 1, 2 and 3 according to the GHG Protocol)

Collection and calculation of data for the carbon footprint

Creation of an overview of existing activity data and data yet to be collected
Collection and consolidation of activity data
Determination of emission factors
Conversion of activity data into CO2 emissions
Documentation of all assumptions and estimates for the consistency of future carbon footprints

Analysing the CO2 balance

Evaluation and discussion of the results of the carbon footprint
Recommendations for action to improve the process and for more accurate data collection
Identification of the most important emission sources

Creation of a climate protection strategy

Development of targets and measures with the involvement of key stakeholders (e.g. employees and suppliers)
Definition of a reduction path for CO2 emissions (ideally science-based, e.g. according to SBTi)
Integration of the climate protection strategy into the existing sustainability and corporate strategy
