Sustainable procurement is understood as the purchase of physical (raw materials, etc.) and intangible resources (services, etc.), taking into account ecological, social and economic criteria. In practice, comprehensive procurement systems are difficult due to the high degree of globalisation of most production processes, as fast, unbureaucratic application is required for purchasing. Traditionally, the development of sustainable procurement therefore begins with focussing on a specific topic (e.g. human rights) or a few resources (e.g. IT procurement).
