Stakeholders are the so-called beneficiaries of an organisation, a project or a process. In corporate sustainability theory, the term is also used to emphasise the difference to shareholders and thus a paradigm shift. This paradigm shift describes the move away from aligning corporate strategy solely with the interests of shareholders towards aligning it with the interests of other authorised groups.
A general distinction is made between internal and external stakeholders. Stakeholder management or stakeholder dialogue aims to incorporate the interests of stakeholders into corporate decisions.
