Climate protection

« Back to Glossary Index

Climate protection includes measures aimed at minimising (anthropogenic) climate change. The main aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or to store greenhouse gases (naturally or technically). The reduction of emissions includes, for example

  • Energy savings in the private and commercial sectors
  • Energy generation from regenerative sources (renewable energies) instead of fossil fuels
  • The mobility turnaround (reduction in transport volumes, use of renewable energies, electromobility, collective transport instead of individual transport)
  • Innovations in energy-intensive sectors such as aluminium production, the chemical industry and paper production
  • Innovations in emission-intensive sectors such as energy generation, the construction industry

Measures to store greenhouse gases include, for example

  • Reforestation projects
  • Safeguarding existing forests and moors
  • Massive use of CO2-storing materials such as wood as an alternative for technically manufactured products
  • Various technical measures for the capture and storage of CO2 (CCS, Carbon Capture and Storage)

This also includes measures to raise awareness of climate change and the opportunities for individual and corporate climate protection measures.
In a broader sense, climate protection also includes measures aimed at mitigating the consequences of climate change.
