Sustainable development

« Back to Glossary Index

Sustainable development (according to the Brundtland Report, 1987) is development that serves the needs of present generations without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. While "sustainability" refers to a principle of action for dealing with resources, "sustainable development" describes a process that takes this principle into account.

Sustainable development has been given particular importance by the United Nations, whose Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are one of the ways in which member states aim to pursue such development.

As a result of the SDGs, the idea of sustainable development is also being increasingly adopted by companies and integrated into their corporate strategy, for example.
