Ecological footprint

« Back to Glossary Index

The ecological footprint is the area on earth that is currently required for a person's lifestyle. This includes, for example, the land required for the production of clothing, food and energy, but also for the disposal of waste or for the sequestration of carbon dioxide released by human activities per person. The values are given in global hectares per person per year and vary considerably depending on the region. The concept was developed by scientists Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees in 1994.
